Toxic waste named Facebook
Can I get sued for that? Hmmm...not sure, but I guess I'll take a gamble. Facebook was founded on a great premise, a way for people to meet, network, and keep in touch. I resisted for a while, only caving in and joining Facebook after a lot of begging from friends and when I was about the have my first beautiful little girl and I knew I would have a lot (A LOT) of pictures and videos to share with friends and family. Facebook was fun at first, I reconnected and caught up with several wonderful old friends and I was able to share pictures of my baby with everyone at once, no e-mails sending just three pictures at a time because the files were too big to send more. I quickly became very much addicted to Facebook, visiting daily, if not multiple times a day. Then, while pregnant with Gia, I was put on modified bedrest and became obsessed. At this point I had moved 1200 miles away from my friends and family and I was stuck on the couch for most of my day with nobody except my one year old around. I used Facebook to get through those months, Facebook became my therapy and my nemesis.
I think frequently people forget that there are real people on the computer with real feelings and real lives, just because you cannot see them, doesn't mean you get to ignore that fact and intentionally hurt people. It is bad enough when you see it happening on a message board where it is a group of strangers per say, but on Facebook when it is friends and family bickering in public and saying nasty things before thinking...that is simply heartbreaking. Facebook has shown me sides of people that I never knew existed and never wanted to see. Family members just being straight mean to people they know and people they don't know, lashing out, hurting feelings, and never once stopping to think or saying I'm sorry. I have a good idea why you never hear I'm sorry...embarrassment. If they aren't embarrassed by their behavior, then I'm not really sure what to think, I don't want to believe they are truly the people they are portraying themselves to be online.
Facebook has become a free for all, anything goes environment, and the toxic waste is flying and families are disintegrating in its wake and it truly saddens me. We have gone from a culture where families lived together, children were raised by villages, and your support system was right next door to a culture of anonymity and isolation. Many people claim that the computer, the internet, Facebook has increased our ability to socialize with a broader range of individuals. My question is, what good is a friend across the world who you have never met when you are severing the ties to the people in your real life. Maybe that is where the grey area lies, what is real life now-a-days? Where are you living? I know for me personally, I'm living far too much of my life in this box of circuits in front of me watching my family self destruct and I think it's time for change.
On the topic of change, the number on the scale may not be changing, but neither is my resolve and I added to my arsenal last night...I WILL WIN! Fat, you might as well just wave the white flag because me and my new Adidas are going to kick your butt!!
